What We Do

  • Engineering designs and manages capital improvement projects from the ground up. Projects include: street and sidewalk reconstruction and resurfacing; water, sewer and drainage projects.
  • Review of private development site plans to ensure compliance to City standards and sound engineering design.
  • Provide engineering information to architects, consulting engineers and contractors relative to city infrastructure, policies and standards.
  • Provide land surveyors with information relative to street line, layout, land plans, street acceptance plans, topographical plans and assessor maps.
  • Maintaining engineering plans, drawings, field books and various records relating to all city-owned infrastructure including: street acceptance plans, sewer plans, drainage plans, water distribution plans, house sewer location field books, parks and playgrounds, city-owned buildings (except schools), etc.
  • Managing the City’s street opening permit program including issuing permits, coordinating the work of various private utility companies as they affect city road projects, ensuring that the trenches are properly backfilled, compacted and patched.
  • Issuing permits to licensed contractors for new sewer and drainage connections and for repair of existing sewer and drainage infrastructure.
  • Providing advice to various boards and public agencies and to the general public when the advice of a professional Civil Engineer is required.
  • Generating environmental compliance reports to the United States’ E.P.A., and Mass. D.E.P.
  • Reviewing petitions from various utility companies for grant of location requests within the city’s right of ways.
  • Overseeing the inspection and any necessary repairs to any dams owned by the City of Marlborough.
  • Administer the city’s rules and regulations for stormwater management and the detection and elimination of illicit discharges to municipal storm drain system ordinance.
  • Responsible for providing survey services for the City of Marlborough. Services include the identification of roadway layout lines, gathering of information for use in design of roadway projects, laying out of athletic fields and other grounds, and survey assistance related to elections.
  • Pursuant to City Code, the engineering division is responsible for issuing street numbers for all houses/buildings within the City. The division coordinates changes of address with the City Council, Fire Department and Police Department when the City Council changes names of streets.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the City of Marlborough's Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS serves to improve City services by assisting with the maintenance, management, and usability of engineering data and mapping information as well as by providing geographical links to City databases.
