What needs to be bid?
While subject to change from time to time by the Commonwealth, current law requires some form of bidding process for most expenditures estimated to cost more than over $5,000. In practice, quotes from more than one source are sought for expenditures below that limit.
Electronic Bidding
An electronic bidding system is under construction where you will be able to retrieve bids, including full-scale plans, directly from the web site. Concurrently, the Commonwealth is working on a centralized system where bids can be posted on the web and you can sign up to be notified of bids within the parameters you establish (type of work, good or service; cost levels, etc.) Currently you can receive any text-only bid by following the directions above. When this is complete, you will be able to register to receive notices by clicking HERE. (THIS PORTION IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
Bid Results:
Do not call the day of the bid opening to request results. If you have email, the names of the three lowest bidders will be emailed the next day. If you do not have email, call the next day.
What's New? The Commonwealth has adopted Chapter 193 of the Acts of 2004 which changes many of the bid laws related to construction. If you are bidding a construction project, whether horizontal (roads, drains, etc.) or vertical (buildings) be sure to check the new statutes. The new statutes can be read at[Link] http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/seslaw04/index.htm
