EXPLORE OTHER WORLDS @ YOUR LIBRARY®
Create all the possibilities of the 2004 Massachusetts Summer Library Adventure with the Marlborough Public Library this summer. Explore other worlds @ your library® offers library events for children of all ages and their families from June 9 through August 23. Children will find fun and encouragement as they pursue their individual reading adventures. Families who join the program will receive reading incentives donated by local merchants and coupons for admission to Massachusetts' cultural and educational attractions.
Educators know that kids who read for the joy of it are the best readers. Families that read together provide the strongest model for future readers. The good news is that families are reading together more than they did in recent years, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. They found:
vIn 1999, 81% of children aged 3 - 5 were read to three or more times in the last week, as compared to 78% in 1993.
v9% of children whose families took them to the library, at least once, in the past month showed three or more signs of emerging literacy (recognizing letters, counting to 20, reading or pretending to read storybooks, or writing their own names) compared to 33% of children whose families did not take them to the library in the past month.
The Massachusetts Summer Reading Program is customized by local library staff in more than 400 libraries from planning materials created by youth librarians throughout Massachusetts. Explore other worlds @ your library® is funded by the Marlborough Public Library, the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Many school libraries will offer previews of the reading program.
Admission to library events is free of charge. For more information, contact the Children's Dept. at the Marlborough Public Library, (508) 624-6902.
