Entry level – Patrol Officer


The City of Marlborough Police Department has immediate openings for the position of Patrol Officer.   Interested candidates are encouraged to register for the written exam (see instructions below).  Successful candidates will then participate in individual and Oral Board interviews.   US Veterans and Marlborough residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
Job Responsibilities:
A patrol officer protects citizen by preventing crime; enforcing laws; apprehending suspects; monitoring traffic.

Job Duties:
               Prevents crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; teaching preventive, protective, and defensive tactics; mediating disputes; patrolling assigned area; responding to notices of disturbances; conducting searches; observing suspicious activities; detaining suspects.
               Apprehends suspects by responding to complaints and calls for help; observing violations; making arrests.
               Conducts criminal investigations by gathering evidence; interviewing victims and witnesses; interrogating suspects.
               Documents observations and actions by radioing information; completing reports.
               Reports observations and actions by testifying in court.
               Fulfills court orders by serving warrants and commitments.
               Maintains safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic; enforcing laws and ordinances; investigating accidents; providing escort; reporting unsafe streets and facilities.
               Minimizes personal injury by rescuing and reviving victims; radioing for medical assistance.
               Maintains operations by following department policies and procedures; recommending changes.
               Ensures operation of equipment by practicing use; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; notifying supervisor of needed repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
               Maintains professional and technical knowledge by studying applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; practicing skills; participating in professional societies.

City of Marlborough
Entry level – Patrol Officer

        1.      Must be 21 years of age and no older than 35 years of age at the time of the exam
        2.      Non-Smoker pursuant to M.G.L. c41, s101A
        3.      Possess a High school diploma or G.E.D. at time of exam. (Preference may be given to applicants possessing a college degree, military experience or a combination of both).
        4.      Proof of citizenship
        5.      Must possess a Massachusetts driver’s license or obtain one prior to appointment
        6.      Must reside within 15 miles of the border of the city of Marlborough within one (1) year of appointment. (Relocations expenses are not provided. Time will be allowed for relocation associated with appointment).
        7.      Must possess or qualify for a Massachusetts Firearms License To Carry (LTC) permit, class-A.  
        8.      Have NO Felony convictions
        9.      Completion of a satisfactory background examination
        10.     Must complete a physical examination and psychological examination (provided by the City of Marlborough).
        11.     Must possess the ability to complete all the requirements established by the Massachusetts Municipal Training Council to be a certified police officer in Massachusetts
        12.     Satisfactory completion of Oral Board interviews

To register for the Marlborough Police Department entrance examination, please log on to the Police Exam Solutions website, and follow the instructions.

        Exam Date:      October 21st, 2017

        Check in:       08:15 a.m. – 09:00 a.m. (exact test time decided TBD by P.E.S.)

        Exam Time:      09:00 a.m.  (NO ENTRY will be allowed after the exam has started)

        Exam location:  Marlborough High School, 431 Bolton Street, Marlborough, MA 01752
